The arson that destroyed Bidwell Mansion leaves us to choose a memorial in its place. For most that means another recognition of John Bidwell as Chico’s founder. While he has long been considered unique and flawless, a few voices today protest him as a “colonizer” complicit in the abuse of the indigenous and Chinese in Chico. Dr. Michele Shover, author of three Chico histories, will discuss this dichotomy and present her conclusions based on thirty years of research in documents from this time.
