Don Alger came to Chico to teach chemistry at Chico State in 1968.

After retirement and forty years of teaching, he started researching local history topics. He wrote "A History of Chemistry at Chico Normal School, Chico State Teachers College, Chico State College and California State University, Chico".

Being a long-time basketball fan, he became interested in the history of men's basketball and in 2013, he produced "One Hundred Years of Basketball". In 2016 he researched and wrote "A History of Women's Basketball at Chico State, 1896-2016".

As part of a Son's In Retirement History Activity, Don Alger and Ray Rolls pursued the quest to just satisfy their curiosity about the Diamond Match Company in Chico and digitally published their 93-page results in 2021. It is available at no charge on request.
