Between 1876 and 1900 white wage laborers resented the rising numbers of Chico workers visible on streets and at job sites. Their reactions started with stoning, built to arson and culminated in killing Chinese. How did the Chinese respond?

Dr. Shover will set out how, although outgunned and outnumbered, Chinese leaders organized a defense by maximizing their advantages and adapting to tactics new to their culture. In Exploring Chico's Past she examined Chico's anti-Chinese movement.
